Choices in Ryegrass For Pastures
Ryegrass seeds are available in either perennial or annual species with choices of grass types within these species. Here we strive to help you understand the difference between perennial ryegrass
and annual rye grass so that you can make an informed choice for your pasture ryegrass. Several ryegrass types exist and species within the ryegrass genus (Lolium)
readily cross with one another, resulting in a wide variety of plant types. This may cause some confusion when trying to determine the best choice for pasture planting.
Ryegrass Seed Cultivars available are:
- Annual or Italian Ryegrass Seed - (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) - Primarily used in the southeast USA as a winter forage crop; Native to Southern Europe;
Cold tolerant; behaves as a biennial or perennial depending on environment and if allowed to seed - Read more about
Annual Ryegrass Pastures.
- Perennial Ryegrass Seed - (Lolium perenne L.) - Native to Europe, Asia and North Africa; Used primarily in the northeast, northwest, and northern
mid-west US; Read more about
Perennial Ryegrass Pastures.
- Intermediate (Short Rotation) Ryegrass - (Lolium
hybridum, Hausska.) is a cross between perennial and annual ryegrass thus possessing intermediate traits of the two cultivars.
- Festulolium Pasture Rye Grass Cross (Hybrid) - (Festulolium braunii, K.A.) - derived from a cross between either Italian or perennial ryegrass and meadow fescue

Perennial Ryegrass Information
Perennial ryegrass seed
is planted in the colder areas of the United States for northern pastures and hay.
This grass is best grown with more than one variety to
establish sod density and achieve a higher degree of forage.
Perennial Ryegrass pastures are highly palatable and nutritious. Perennial Ryegrass grass is also used in grass seed mixes. Ryegrass is a multi-purpose grass used
to seed with clovers or other legumes, bromes, wheat grasses, orchard grass, timothy, hybrid ryegrass, tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass. Each grass seed mix is selected for specific reasons and according to the areas
of adaptation. Perennial ryegrass is also a multi-used grass in overseeding summer forages
and less winter hardy grass.
Perennial Ryegrass Seeding Rate
Broadcast at 20-30 LB/Acre (30-35 for best results in low to medium fertile fields), lightly
harrowing afterward to get good soil contact. Overseeding will require less seed -- generally 15 lbs per acre.

Do Not Plant Ryegrass Developed For Lawns In Pastures!
Due to the potential for some ryegrasses to produce higher than desirable Endophyte production of toxins, you should only plant ryegrasses that have a known history of safe use for
forages. Most of the newer improved perennial ryegrass
varieties for lawns may contain endophytes and are NOT
usually suitable or recommended for pasture use. You should
plant an annual or Perennial ryegrass variety that is known to be
safe for animals. Most of the annual ryegrasses (gulf /
improved forage varieties - Marshall,
Passerel Plus Ryegrass,
Gulf Annual Ryegrass, etc.) are safe for

Gulf Annual Ryegrass
Annual ryegrass is used to overseed thousands of acres of summer pasture
grasses and erosion sites on farms and ranches. Planting ryegrass is also an effective natural method that can lessen nematode
infestation if used in rotational plantings with other crops.
Also great for use as a natural weed controller
when sown in heavy stands.
There are several improved annual ryegrass varieties adapted for the Southern pastures and for overseeding of those pastures
to provide additional green forage.
Passerel Plus Ryegrass, Marshall and
Gulf Annual Ryegrass are
three popular ones of the many varieties sold today.
Annual Ryegrass Seeding Rate
Seed planting rate for Annual Ryegrass is 25-40 lbs. per acre. Overseeding will require less seed -- generally 15 lbs per acre. Harrow or aerate for best results to make good seed /
PASSEREL PLUS ANNUAL RYEGRASS
Passerel is a high yielding pasture grass with a digestible nutrient level of level of 75%+
and was number one in 95-96 University of Fla. trials yielding 9320 lbs./acre over the
nearest competitor. More heat tolerant than Marshall providing a longer grazing period.
high palatability. One of the best annual grasses for hay and forage.
USES FOR GULF ANNUAL RYEGRASS
Gulf annual ryegrass is a basic annual ryegrass used in
short term winter pastures, companion crop planting, green manure, erosion control,
wildlife food plots, and to overseed any warm season ground cover or grass. Palatable and easily grown in most all situations.
